Give Your Dentist a Checkup

A midwest dentist made the news recently for using dirty and infected instruments, putting thousands of patients at risk for HIV or hepatitis.
When you go to the dentist, don’t be afraid to speak up if there’s something that doesn’t seem right. For example, his gloves should come from a new container, not be lying around on the counter. They should only touch the instruments or your mouth. If your dentist leaves the room for something, make sure he puts on new gloves when he gets back.
If you’re still worried about things, don’t be afraid to ask to see his autoclave validation certificate. That will reassure you that he’s properly sterilizing his instruments. Make sure the instruments he uses on you come from a sealed pouch.
Don’t be afraid to speak up. The infection you save could be your own.
