Five Ways to Survive 2015

As a medical malpractice lawyer, I encounter many people each week who are victims of medical mis-steps of one kind or another. While most don’t rise to the level of malpractice, there are lessons to be learned. I want to share those with you, and give you some insights to a more healty 2015:

1. Get medical insurance. Say what you will about Obamacare, it’s a way for the uninsured to get cheap medical insurance. Can’t afford it, you say? I’ll only say this once, but I’ll say it loud: YOU CAN’T AFFORD NOT TO HAVE IT. Like most things, it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

2. MAKE your doctor listen to you. Doctors and nurses are busy, and I see many lives that could have been saved if only the health care providers had listened to what their patients were trying to tell them. You know more about what’s going on with your body than your doctor does. Make sure he listens to you.

3. Get regular checkups (see 1 above). Many medical diseases and cancers, when detected early, are curable.

4. If you smoke, stop. Easier said than done, but it’s probably the single most helpful thing you can do for a longer, healthier life. Put your cigarette money toward insurance (see 1 above) or for something fun.

5. Forget exercise, if you don’t already do it. (WHAT??) BUT, what you should do is take a 15-minute walk a couple of times a day. You won’t believe how much better you feel. Take the dog out. He’ll love you for it. If you don’t have a dog, think about adopting one. He’ll REALLY love you for it.
