An excellent article by Kimberly Hiss of Readers Digest details hospital billing practices, and is something everyone who goes to a hospital should read.
For example, a California study showed the costs for treating acute appendicitis varied from $1,529 to $183,000.
The author advises hospital patients to keep a log of services they receive and the times they are in the or or recovery, to check with the itemized bill at the end of their stay.
Also, beware of out-of-network services hospitals provide. Even though the hospital may be in your insurance network, some of the services they offer may not–such as radiology, anesthesiology, pathology and er services.
