What Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities Don’t Want You to Know

If you have a loved one in a skilled nursing home or assisted living facility, there are some things the the administration of those facilities would rather you didn’t know. Here are a few:

1. Pressure sores are avoidable, and mostly result from neglect. Unless the resident has advanced cancer or some other life-threatening health condition, pressure sores–also known as bedsore or decubitus ulcers) should not happen. They’re a result of lying or sitting too long in one position, inadequate nutritional support and not being on a pressure-relieving mattress.

2. You have a right to see the results of the facility’s State inspections, and their plan to correct any deficiencies. By law, these inspection results have to be posted at the facility, but they’re not always posted in a place you can easily find and read.

3. Chances are, the nursing home where your loved one is being cared for has little or no insurance to cover their acts of negligence. Most nursing homes in Florida have “wasting” insurance policies, that first go to pay their own lawyers to defend nursing home claims. Usually, after that, there’s nothing left to pay for their negligence.

More later. I’ve scared you enough for today. Happy Monday.
